das rean{\'a}lises do ERA-40, com uma resolu{\c{c}}{\~a}o de
1,125°x 1,125°. As principais caracter{\'{\i}}sticas dos eventos
As regi{\~o}es
Rond{\^o}nia, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul e Santa
Catarina com maiores porcentagens de eventos secos. Os resultados
indicam que os SPI-1 e SPI-3 s{\~a}o espacialmente e
temporalmente bastante vari{\'a}veis. As maiores escalas (SPI-6 e

events for the Central-western, Southeastern and Southern Brazil
using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) for the period
1958-2001. Reanalysis ERA-40 data were used to calculate SPIs,
with a resolution of 1.125 ° x 1.125 °. The main characteristics
of wets and drys periods as frequency, duration and intensity,
were defined for the whole region and different time scales
between 1 and 12 months. Events the Central-western, Southeastern
and Southern had higher percentage of rainfall events main dry
events due to a progressive increase in rainfall in the 70s and
80s. The States of Goias, Tocantins, Bahia and Mato Grosso showed
the highest percentage of rainy events, and Rond{\^o}nia, Mato
Grosso do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina higher
percentages of dry events. The results indicate that the SPI-1 and
SPI-3 are spatially and temporally highly variable. The largest
scales (SPI-6 and SPI-12) respond more slowly to deficits and
rainfalls excess, and represent long duration rainfalls and
droughts, therefore they are recommended to monitor large areas.
The spatial and temporal patterns were obtained by the Principal
Component Analysis (PCA) technique, and the results showed a
marked North and South contrast in the first spatial pattern.
These patterns may be associated with the Pacific Decadal
Oscillation (ODP) and El Niņo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).",
